Updated: May 29, 2020

Here below the abstract of the study and the presentation titled "Youth and diversity management in the Republic of North Macedonia: determining the impact of gender and sexual orientation" by Marjan Mladenovski, Associate Professor at Euro College of Kumanovo (Republic of North Macedonia) in occasion of the Learning Mobility at UBI University in Covilha (Portugal) in November 2019 on behalf of "Cultural Studies in Business" project.

Abstract

In the last few decades there is a global trend of increased opening of the labor market to all social groups and individuals, irrespective of race, nationality, ethnicity, religious, gender, sexual orientation, disability etc. The managers are facing with new conditions that bring an opportunity for competitive advantage, but also potential problems at workplace. Therefore, the main idea of this paper was to determine the attitudes of among young people in North Macedonia for accepting “different” from themselves at workplace, with focus on gender and sexual orientation. The paper, actually has a research approach, since it is on methodological techniques – survey, where in the focus are students of faculties of Business Administration of the Republic of North Macedonia.

Crucial questions that the youth (future managers) were asked, were related to the horizontal relationships – work in the same office, opening the joint venture and the vertical relations to such issues as employment, promotion or working for a manager - member of the different gender and sexual orientation. The main research results indicate serious challenges that future managers will face in the terms of acceptance of workers with "different" sexual orientation (LGBT population), while gender is not too big barrier in business relations.
